Our Philosophy

RSK Psychiatry takes a therapy-first approach for treating psychiatric disorders. Medications have their place, but they also have their side effects. Bad psychiatry is worse than no psychiatry and many patients are scared away from mental health treatment due to side effects caused by inappropriate use of medication or simultaneous use of too many medications.

At RSK Psychiatry, patients are encouraged to engage in regular therapy to obtain maximal benefit from treatment. Studies looking at depression, anxiety, OCD, and other conditions show that regular therapy is equivalent to (and sometimes even superior) to medication alone and doesn’t involve any pesky or potentially life-threatening side effects. Studies also show that a combination of therapy and medications can have the best effect on mental health conditions.

The goal of RSK Psychiatry is to provide an integrative treatment approach tailored to your individual needs. Therapy can be as intense as five sessions a week to monthly check ins and everything in between. It can be supportive, introspective, directive, or simply a nonjudgemental ear to vent frustrations. People have different needs and schedules requiring different methods. What therapy is NOT is a ten-minute appointment to refill your prescription. Sessions are offered in 25 minute “pow wows” or more traditional 50-minute appointments to allow you to express your feelings and be heard. If you would benefit from medication and are open to using medication, this is decided on a mutual basis. No one at RSK Psychiatry will tell you, “This is what you HAVE to take.” Patients are collaborators for their mental health care and patients know their bodies best.

At the end of the day, patients at RSK Psychiatry engage in therapy on at least a monthly basis, even if it’s brief. Medications will not be prescribed if you are unwilling to participate in talk therapy. RSK Psychiatry believes in getting back to the roots of mental health treatment while offering modern advances in care when appropriate.
